Deafness Forum of Australia
Deafness Forum of Australia is the peak national body representing the interests of the 3.5 million Australians who live with hearing loss. Our mission is to make hearing health & wellbeing a national priority in Australia. Our work encompasses the full human experience and includes accessibility in communications and the made environment, human rights, justice, education, employment, transport, health and aged care.
Today, one in six Australians is affected by hearing loss. For many it is so debilitating that it affects their family and social lifestyle and their employment. With an ageing population, hearing loss is projected to increase to 1 in every 4 Australians by 2050. Go to www.deafnessforum.org.au for more information.
This online course has been designed to help Australians affected by hearing loss to improve their confidence in lipreading ability to assist their communication in day to day life and has been produced with funding through the NDIS Information, Linkages and Capacity Building program, part of the Australian Government Department of Social Services. Go to www.dss.gov.au for more information.
The Read Our Lips Australia course fee is claimable through an individual’s National Disability Insurance Scheme plan. How you claim the course fee will depend on your individual goals and how your plan is managed. For example, the fee may be claimed under Capacity Building for improved social and community participation; or alternatively under Core Supports for individual capacity-building training.
For more information, contact your Local Area Coordinator, Support Coordinator or Plan Manager.
Read Our Lips Australia
Read Our Lips Australia is an online course created and managed by the Deafness Forum of Australia and used under license from the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association - Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL).
This class is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about lipreading, also know as speechreading, and wants to improve their skills in this area. We are dedicated to supporting those with hearing loss, and their families, by improving their quality of life through communication skills.
Communication means feeling connected. When we can see what's being said, we feel a part of what's happening. We've always believed that the antidote to isolation is inclusion. Lipreading can be life-changing.
That's why we made a safe, accessible online space to learn how at your own pace. We're not just teaching, we're helping open doors to a more confident life. See speech, feel connected.
